Details About Cochin

Destinations » Asia » Africa - Persia - India » Cochin

Set on the Maladar coast amid small islands and narrow inlets, Cochin has a history of being a premier port along the fabled "spice route" to the East. The Portuguese, Dutch and British struggled to gain control of the city during the 400-year long colonial period, and guests see a unique mixture of architecture as they explore the sights.

Attractions

Parishath Thamburan Museum - Located on mainland Ernakulam, the museum is housed in the old Durbar Hall. It features 19th-century oil paintings, old coins, sculptures and some collections and memorabilia that belonged to the Kochi royal family. (Be sure to check the museum’s opening times.)

Activities

A visit to the St. Francis church reveals the tomb of Portuguese explorer Vasco do Gama.

Shopping

The main shopping area is located on MG Road and Broadway, approximately eight miles from the pier. Look for spices, gold jewelry, local handicrafts and clothing. Rosewood carvings and antiques are also popular items; a good selection can be found in Jewtown. Bargaining is expected in markets and smaller shops. State emporiums have fixed prices and are a good source for handicrafts from all over India.

Currency

The Indian Rupee is the local currency used here.
